Saturday protests in Mozambique over the October 9 election resulted in at least 20 injuries and arson attacks on two government buildings in Maputo, the local authorities told the media.
The opposition presidential candidate, Venancio Mondlane, announced that a new phase of protests would begin this past Wednesday and last for a week.
According to Orlando Mudumane, a spokesman for the national police, protesters in Maputo used burning tires and homemade bombs to block roads and attack government buildings. During clashes with police, who responded with tear gas, about 20 people were injured.
"But we managed to disperse them before they could attack and vandalize police units and seize their equipment," he told the media.
Post-election violence, sparked by Mondlane's challenge to the ruling party FRELIMO's victory, has already claimed at least 90 lives and injured 340 since it began.
