South Africa will support Nigeria if the country wants to become a member of the G20, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said during the official launch of his country’s presidency of the G20 in Cape Town.
"Nigeria will be keenly supported by us. We have been a lone member of G20. We shall need to raise the voice of Africa which had been neglected," Ramaphosa noted.
Nigeria reportedly expressed its desire to join the association on Monday. According to local media, the country requested support from South Africa.
Currently, the African continent is represented in the G20 by the African Union, which joined in 2023, and by South Africa.
Earlier, Ramaphosa pledged to use the country's G20 presidency to draw the group's attention to the development of Africa and the Global South. He also promised to establish working groups within the G20 on food security, artificial intelligence, and innovation.
