Namibia's Communications Regulatory Authority (CRAN) ordered SpaceX's Starlink to immediately cease operations in the country due to its unlicensed operation of a satellite internet network.
The CEO of CRAN, Emilia Nghikembua, warned the public not to buy or subscribe to Starlink services, stating that they are illegal. The authority has already confiscated illegal equipment and opened criminal investigations into the matter.
"CRAN remains committed to enforcing the Communications Act to ensure fair competition, consumer protection, and compliance with regulatory requirements. We urge all service providers to adhere to the legal framework governing the telecommunications sector in Namibia," she said.
Although Starlink has applied for a license, CRAN stated that the application is still under review. The authority warned that legal action could be taken against anyone using the service and advised the public to avoid importing or using Starlink until a license is granted.
