South Africa will prioritize food security as the next G20 chair following Brazil, the African country's President Cyril Ramaphosa said at the Social Inclusion and the Fight Against Poverty and Hunger session on the sidelines of the G20 Leaders' Summit in Brazil's capital, Rio de Janeiro, on Monday.
"Food security will be one of the high-level priorities of South Africa's G20 presidency," he stated.
South Africa supports Brazil's focus on social inclusion and hunger reduction, emphasizing the need for comprehensive social support systems to address poverty, especially in developing nations facing economic challenges, Ramaphosa pointed out.
The country also urges the G20 to prioritize sustainable development goals in financing decisions, fulfill outstanding commitments, and mobilize new funding for sustainable development, the South African leader added.
The president highlighted his country's own social programs, aiming to alleviate poverty and reduce inequality.
"South Africa is committed to end poverty, malnutrition and hunger in line with our National Development Plan," he said.
The G20 leaders' summit is taking place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from November 18 to 19. Brazil holds the group's rotating presidency this year. On December 1, South Africa will become the G20 chair.
