Luckily for African Countries, Donald Trump Does Not Care About Them, Cameroonian Activist Says

Donald Trump's victory in the US presidential election offers a window of opportunity for Africa, Pan-Africanist Nathalie Yamb told Sputnik Africa on the sidelines of the Russia-Africa ministerial conference in the Russian city of Sochi.

"Donald Trump doesn't care about Africa; he's said that repeatedly, and in fact, he didn't mention Africa once in his entire presidential campaign," the Pan-Africanist said.

According to the speaker, the current situation is a plus for Africa.

"Because at least it means that he will leave us alone, that he's not going to focus on us," the activist explained.

Moreover, the fact that Trump's coming to power will weaken Europe is also an opportunity for Africa to advance in the struggle for liberation, Yamb emphasized.

Trump will damage relations within NATO, and Washington's allies "know very well what awaits them," the speaker continued.

"It's not even a week after the election, and we already see French leaders and others starting to say that we need to rebalance, that we need to take responsibility ourselves," the expert noted.

The European leaders are weakened now because "from January their sponsor, their American ally, will no longer be the ally they have known in the past," the speaker said, referring to Trump's upcoming inauguration on January 20.

As for the situation in Ukraine, Yamb expects new negotiations or even a freeze of the conflict, which is more likely to be proposed by the US President-elect Trump.

This is why Africans are turning to other sources of information.

"I think from the Russian side, and from the side of any normal person, it's an end to the conflict that we have to achieve. But at least I think there will be channels of communication that can be established again," Yamb pointed out.

"People [in Africa] have woken up; they are looking for reliable information, and they know that reliable information is not coming from the Western mainstream media," the expert noted.

As long as the Russian media remain open and guarantee diversity of opinion, "they have a pretty optimistic path ahead of them," the Cameroonian activist stressed.

In addition, Russia's cooperation with African media, which allows African speakers to express their point of view, is much appreciated across Africa, she said.

According to the Pan-Africanist, the Western media and authorities regret the sanctions.

"The freedom of speech that they are trying to suppress is breaking out more and more. The more you try to suppress something, the more it breaks out and one day it explodes. These things can't work. They [the West] can prolong the agony, but they are dying," she stressed.

Colonialism Never Ended, Russia and Africa Must be Strong to Defeat it

According to Nathalie Yamb, colonialism did not disappear, and while people seem to think that in the 1960s African countries gained their independence, there was no such thing because "someone who took off his hat and changed it, put on another hat and went on."

Africa needs a synergy of solutions that can change the system that no longer suits the continent because there is a Western minority that tries to impose its wishes on the rest of the world, the expert noted.

"And they've been doing it to Africa for a very long time. They've also been trying to do it to Russia for a very long time. So today, they've attacked both entities at the same time," she added.

To defeat the unipolar minority of the West that seeks to continue dominating the world, Russia and Africa must be strong to be able to support each other, Yamb concluded.

The IMF and World Bank Blackmail Africa, While BRICS Offers Alternative

Instead of supporting the development efforts of the African countries, which know best what is good for them, the IMF and the World Bank's chiefs decide "from their offices in Washington" to use the financial resources at their disposal, which also belong to all the African countries, since they are members of these institutions, the activist explained.

"Today, these institutions are blackmailing Africa. They shamelessly use coercive instruments with no legal basis to tell Africa: if you want us to finance such and such a thing, then you have to agree to pass pro-LGBT laws; you have to decriminalize homosexuality," the speaker pointed out.

For this reason, African countries are interested in alternative institutions that can replace the current international system of global governance based on the Bretton Woods system, according to the expert.

"I think that's why Africans are very interested in what's happening in the BRICS, in the alternative that the BRICS could offer, even in terms of means of payment, means of financing, the BRICS’ New Development Bank, the whole system that's being built insensibly alongside and that could be an alternative to a system that was built on bases that are totally obsolete today," she concluded.
