Gambia Takes Part in BRICS Events Seeking Future Full Membership, Ambassador to Russia Says

SIRIUS, Russia (Sputnik) - BRICS is an intergovernmental organization established in 2006. Russia's 2024 presidency of BRICS began with the joining of new members. Adding to Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, it now includes Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, UAE and Saudi Arabia; the latter has not formalized its membership.

The Gambia participates in BRICS events as an observer and this could result in its full membership in the association, Gambian Ambassador to Russia Ebrima Ceesay told Sputnik.

"The Gambia will consider the criteria for accession. We start with the approval for cooperation as an observer, which could eventually lead to full membership in BRICS," Ceesay said on the sidelines of the first ministerial conference of the Russia-Africa Partnership Forum in Sochi.

The Gambia could become a full member once it meets the necessary criteria, he added.
"As we move forward, we increasingly want to be part of BRICS," the ambassador said.
