Trump's Return Could Normalize US Democracy, Restore International Relations, Says Ethiopian Scholar

Republican candidate and former President Donald Trump's victory is a potential catalyst for restoring the health of American democracy, which has been declining under incumbent President Joe Biden, according to Dr. Petros Woldegiorgis, president of Bonga University in Ethiopia.

Trump's policies could re-establish a more cooperative approach to international relations, replacing the "decline of American influence" observed in recent years, Dr. Woldegiorgis said in an interview with Sputnik Africa.

"American influence on global politics declined to a greater extent; it has already been replaced by the emerging powers. Trump’s victory, in this regard, could normalize the democratic process at home and re-establish international relations based on cooperation," said Dr. Woldegiorgis.

Concerning the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the Ethiopian academic believes Trump's victory could bring about a significant shift.
According to him, Trump's previous criticism of US support for Ukraine and his pledge to end the conflict swiftly could lead to a reduction in military and financial aid to Ukraine, potentially paving the way for negotiations with Russia.

"A Trump presidency could weaken NATO's unity and support for Ukraine," he added.

Regarding the Israel-Palestine conflict, Dr. Woldegiorgis expresses concerns about the potential for heightened tensions, particularly due to Trump's previous stance on Jerusalem and his hardline policies toward Iran. He believes that Iran's direct involvement in the conflict, coupled with Trump's negative stance, could exacerbate the situation.
Turning to Africa, the university head acknowledged that Trump's "America First" approach could lead to reduced engagement with African nations.

"However, on the positive side, Trump’s America First and non-interventionist policies would bring peace to most African nations," he said.

In conclusion, Dr. Woldegiorgis encouraged African nations to leverage opportunities provided by the BRICS group to advance their political and economic interests in a multipolar world.
