Masiapato said they were forced to take the step after Mozambican protesters tried to follow a group of 15 fleeing Mozambican officials across the border. He added that South African authorities were taking proactive measures to prevent violence from spilling over.

On Wednesday, South Africa said it would temporarily close the Lebombo border crossing for security reasons. The port of entry was reopened to let Mozambican citizens return home.
Mozambique's presidential election took place on October 9. The candidate of the ruling Frelimo party, Daniel Chapo, won the election with over 70% of the vote, while independent candidate Venancio Mondlane came in second with some 20%. The results sparked civil unrest and a wave of protests across the country.
