Kenya Seeks China's Support for BRICS Membership as Chinese Top Official Visits, Media Reports

BRICS is an intergovernmental organization established in 2006. Russia's 2024 presidency of BRICS began with the joining of new members. In addition to Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, it now includes Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, UAE and Saudi Arabia; the latter has not formalized membership but participates in BRICS meetings.

Li Xi, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau, arrived in Kenya for bilateral talks. He was greeted by officials, including Kenyan President William Ruto, at Nairobi State House on Monday.
"Kenya, I want to assure you, is committed to promoting this partnership across Africa and also upholding the 'One China' policy,'' Ruto stated during talks, highlighting the country's commitment to fostering China-Kenya relationships, particularly in the field of development projects.

President Ruto also reportedly requested China's support for Kenya's bid to join the BRICS group.
