Benin Brings Back Ceremonial Royal Stool of 17th Century

France conquered the Kingdom of Dahomey, which was located on the territory of current Benin, in 1892–1894. It was then included in French West Africa. French troops led by Colonel Dodds, who rose to the rank of general, plundered 27 objects from the king's palace at Abomey, the capital of Dahomey, in 1892.

Benin brought back katakle, a ceremonial royal stool of the 17th century, the country's government said in a statement. The return of the artifact took place during the meeting of Beninese and Finnish foreign ministers in Helsinki.

"As a sign of this renewed cooperation, Olushegun Adjadi Bakari expressed his gratitude to the National Museum of Finland for the initiative to return the Royal Katakle Stool, the twenty-seventh piece of the Royal treasures," the government said.
