The BRICS Summit was important in light of the increasing complexity of global issues, including deepening geopolitical divisions and conflicts. As the world faces unprecedented challenges, such as the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the crisis in Gaza, there are growing concerns about threats to international peace and security, Professor Eghosa Osaghae, Director General, Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, tells Global South Pole.
He emphasizes that this coalition not only serves as a platform for economic cooperation but also represents a significant shift in global power dynamics that have historically marginalized many countries, particularly in Africa.
“BRICS represents a platform of hope. First, it reflects the ambitions and aspirations of the Global South to play these kinds of roles and the demands for inclusivity and stability and for justice and fairness. Given the fact that the extant international order is the one that has been dominated by the United States and its Western allies. It does appear, therefore, that if the Global South is going to participate more effectively […] that will represent its interests, then platforms like BRICS […] would become more imperative,” the official stresses.
