Ethiopia has started the construction of Africa's largest airport, capable of handling 100-130 million passengers annually, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced in a speech to the lower house of the parliament, the House of Peoples' Representatives, according to local media FANA.
The new airport will be linked to existing infrastructure by rail transport, the media noted.
Ethiopian Airlines, already Africa's largest operator, is further expanding its fleet with 124 new aircraft, consolidating its position as a major aviation hub on the continent. The airline is also expanding its maintenance and overhaul facilities, creating more jobs, and enhancing its operations, FANA added.
The development comes as Ethiopian Airlines was recognized as the "Best Overall in Africa" at the 2025 APEX Passenger Choice Awards. The airline was awarded for its outstanding performance in various categories, including cabin service, entertainment, food and beverage, seat comfort, and Wi-Fi.
