Western Sanctions Contribute to Development of Innovations in Zimbabwe, State Media Says

For over 20 years, Zimbabwe has been under the sanctions imposed by the United States and the European Union for alleged human rights abuses and a lack of democracy in the country. According to the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the United Nations, the sanctions affected Zimbabweans' access to basic necessities.

Restrictions made the country’s government think about its own potential and technology. Among other things, the country seeks to apply innovations in the education sphere, reported the state media, citing government officials.

In 2018, the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science, and Technology Development adopted a new program, according to which Harare intends to generate graduates capable of tackling national challenges.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa said earlier that he wants to see a knowledge-driven economy through a shift to innovation-led learning methods. He considers higher education an important factor of the country’s growth in the future.

"For a country to prosper, higher education institutions have a pivotal role to play. Our Government has created a space for young people to come up with ideas, and as Government, we administratively, socially, and even politically support them as we move towards achieving Vision 2030," Deputy Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education Simelisizwe Sibanda said.
