Kenya will send 600 more police officers to Haiti next month within the framework of the UN's Mission for Stabilization (MSS) in Haiti, Kenyan President William Ruto said on Friday at a joint media briefing with Haitian Prime Minister Garry Conille.
Kenya's additional officers aim to improve security and combat the gangs, according to Ruto.
While 10 countries pledged nearly 2,900 troops for the Kenyan-led MSS in Haiti, only about 430 have arrived, almost all of them Kenyan.
The deployment comes as gangs continue to gain control of Port-au-Prince, leading to increased violence, including a recent massacre that killed over 115 people.
The UN Security Council extended the MSS's mandate for another year. However, a US proposal to turn it into a UN peacekeeping mission was rejected due to opposition from Russia and China.
The humanitarian crisis in Haiti continues to worsen, with over 700,000 people displaced and nearly half the population facing hunger.
