Ten people have been killed, and five others injured in a mining accident that occurred on Monday at a mine in Mumbwa district, located in Central Province, the Zambia Police Service said in a statement on Monday.
According to preliminary data, an unknown number of people went into the mine on Monday morning to carry out mining activities. As they worked, the earth collapsed on them. Rescue efforts led to the recovery of six injured miners, while nine were pronounced dead at the scene. Sadly, one of the six injured miners later succumbed to his injuries at Nangoma Mission Hospital.
"The Zambia Police Service, in collaboration with other relevant authorities, is working diligently to ascertain the exact number of people who were in the mine at the time of the accident and to provide assistance to those affected," the statement added.
