Tanzania's Deputy Prime Minister and Energy Minister Doto Biteko assured manufacturers of a reliable electricity supply, highlighting the recent addition of power from the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project as a key factor.
While acknowledging recent power outages, Biteko emphasized that increased hydroelectric generation significantly reduced reliance on gas for electricity production. The government is also committed to improving infrastructure to ensure widespread electricity access.
"We are currently generating enough electricity to meet domestic demand and can also export if required," Biteko said, noting that parts of Kigoma and Kagera regions will soon be connected to the national grid, which is part of President Samia Suluhu Hassan's strategy to develop the country's manufacturing sector.
Tanzania's electricity generation reached 2,138 megawatts in March 2024, with an additional 235 megawatts from the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Plant soon to be connected to the grid.
