The Sudanese army has launched a major offensive against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Khartoum, targeting several key areas controlled by the rebel paramilitary group. The offensive began early Wednesday morning, with clashes reported in the center, west, and south of the city.
The army reportedly crossed bridges from the neighboring city of Omdurman, pushing into Khartoum, partly controlled by the RSF. Smoke plumes were seen rising from various locations, including the vicinity of the Armored Corps south of Khartoum and the al-Istritagia headquarters in Al-Muqrin, which the RSF seized in June.
Clashes and smoke were also observed in central Khartoum at the al-Arabi Market, the army's General Command headquarters, and near the Signal Corps, south of the neighboring city of Khartoum Bahri.
In addition to the offensive in Khartoum, the army launched a ground attack on Singa, the capital of Sennar State, and conducted airstrikes on El Daein, the capital of East Darfur State, both of which are considered RSF strongholds.
The army's offensive comes after General Yasir Al-Atta, the assistant commander-in-chief, promised a comprehensive air and ground attack to destroy the RSF and its allies.
On April 15, 2023, an armed conflict broke out between the Sudanese armed forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. The warring parties have since introduced several temporary nationwide ceasefires, but none have helped settle the crisis.
