The Egyptian authorities emphasized that the nuclear power sector is a basis for diversifying the sources of electricity generation in the country, the presidency said.
This came after President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi's meeting with Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouly and a number of relevant ministers on Sunday. The meeting focused on plans to develop the national electricity system and the available financing mechanisms for this purpose.
"The discussions focused on work progress in the Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant project, including its implementation, timeline, and accomplishments at the engineering, technical, administrative levels, as well as training and human resources development," the administration of the president stated.
The Egyptian leadership further reaffirmed "Egypt’s commitment to enhancing the nuclear power sector as a cornerstone for the diversification of electricity generation sources."
By 2028, Rosatom will build four units of the plant with VVER-1200 nuclear reactors and will supply nuclear fuel for the entire life cycle of the NPP (60 years). It will also provide personnel training, maintenance, and repair services for 10 years after the commissioning of each unit. The contract also provides for the construction of the first module for dry container storage of spent nuclear fuel by 2028.
Egypt expects the NPP to reach full capacity by 2030.
