Netherlands to Return 288 Cultural Artifacts Taken During Colonial Era to Indonesia, Government Says

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - In 2023, the Netherlands also returned to Indonesia and Sri Lanka 478 cultural objects brought to the European country during the colonial period.

The Netherlands will return 288 cultural objects to Indonesia that were brought to the country during the colonial period, the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture, and Science said on Friday.

"In response to a request from Indonesia, the Netherlands is returning 288 objects from the Dutch State Collection to Indonesia. These objects were wrongfully taken to the Netherlands during the colonial period and are of cultural interest to Indonesia," the ministry said in a statement.

The Netherlands will return four Hindu-Buddhist sculptures and 284 objects from the Puputan Badung Collection, it added.

The artifacts are currently part of the collection of the Wereldmuseum and will be returned to Indonesia on Friday, the statement read.
The decision was made upon the advice of the country's Colonial Collections Committee and in accordance with the national policy on colonial collections, the ministry said.
