"I would like to thank everyone for your concern and well wishes - It was certainly an interesting day! Most importantly, I want to thank the US Secret Service Sheriff Ric Bradshaw and his Office of brave and dedicated Patriots, and, all of Law Enforcement, for the incredible job done today at Trump International in keeping me, as the 45th President of the United States, and the Republican Nominee in the upcoming Presidential Election, SAFE. THE JOB DONE WAS ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING. I AM VERY PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN!" Trump wrote on Truth Social.
In July, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks attempted to assassinate Trump at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. The gunman shot Trump in the ear, killing one audience member and wounding two others. A Secret Service sniper shot back at Crooks, fatally injuring him.
The second shooting occurred on Sunday at Trump's golf club in Florida. According to law enforcement officials, Secret Service agents opened fire on a gunman hiding in the bushes. Trump was not injured. The assailant fled the scene and attempted to flee in a vehicle, but was apprehended.
An AK-47 with a telescopic sight, two backpacks, and a GoPro camera were found near where the shooter was spotted. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has joined the investigation into the assassination attempt.
After the July attack in Pennsylvania, Assistant Director of the Office of Protective Operations Michael Plati retired from the US Secret Service. His retirement was attributed to the failure of the agency to properly secure the event. Director of the US Secret Service Kimberly Cheatle also had to resign in July following widespread criticism.
