The Comoros President Azali Assoumani was attacked by an unknown person who stabbed him with a dagger, a local Habari za Comores news portal reported on Friday.
The perpetrator was detained and is reportedly being interrogated. According to the media, the offender might be a police officer related to the deceased man.
"The head of state was victim of an attack in Salimani-Itsandra," an area on the outskirts of the capital Moroni, government spokeswoman Fatima Ahamadael was quoted as saying by the French media outlet. "Thank God, his life is not in danger."
There were no other details at that moment.
The 65-year-old Azali was reelected in January.
