Botswana's incumbent President, Mokgweetsi Masisi, announced that the country's general elections are scheduled for October 30.
The 2024 general election in Botswana will see a contest between several political parties: the ruling Botswana Democratic Party, led by incumbent President Mokgweetsi Masisi; the Umbrella for Democratic Change; the Botswana Congress Party; and the Botswana Patriotic Front.
The Botswana Movement for Democracy and the Botswana Republican Party will also be participating. While the Botswana Republican Party is a new entrant, the Botswana Movement for Democracy failed to secure any seats in the previous election.
President Masisi announced that political parties will nominate their presidential candidates at the Gaborone High Court on September 28, followed by parliamentary and council candidate nominations on October 4. To encourage voter participation, both October 30 and 31 will be declared public holidays.
The Botswana Democratic Party confirmed President Mokgweetsi Masisi as their presidential candidate at a congress this past weekend.
