Ethiopian Airlines has announced the suspension of flights to and from Asmara, Eritrea, effective September 3rd, citing "difficult operating conditions" beyond its control.
"Ethiopian regrets to inform its valued customers traveling to/from Asmara that it has suspended its flights to Asmara effective September 3, 2024, due to very difficult operating conditions it has encountered in Eritrea that are beyond its control," Ethiopia's state-owned carrier said without elaborating on the specific operating conditions.
The airline's announcement follows a similar move by Eritrea in July, which announced suspending Ethiopian Airlines flights to and from Asmara by September 30 without explanation.
Ethiopian Airlines has offered to rebook affected passengers on alternative carriers at no additional cost or provide refunds. However, despite the suspension, indirect flights to Asmara from Ethiopia remain available on the airline's website.
The Eritrean government has yet to comment publicly on the developments.
