The German Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation has released a preliminary report on the plane crash that killed Malawi’s former Vice President Saulosi Chilima and eight others. The report noted missing flight recorders and a non-functional emergency locator.
It revealed that the aircraft was not equipped with a Cockpit Voice Recorder or a Flight Data Recorder, and these devices were not required by relevant aviation regulations.
The aircraft was manufactured in Germany, which led the Malawian government to enlist German experts for the investigation.
Amid public pressure for a comprehensive investigation, a final report is expected next year.
On June 10, a military plane carrying Malawi's Vice President, Saulos Chilima, and nine others crashed in a forest, resulting in their tragic deaths. Following the plane crash, which killed Chilima, the country's party, Alliance for Democracy, asked the United Nations to intervene in the investigation into the incident.
