The winners of the first International Leo Tolstoy Peace Prize will be announced at a ceremony to be held on the birthday of the great Russian writer and philosopher - September 9, 2024, on the Historical Stage of the State Academic Bolshoi Theater of Russia.
The ceremony will be attended by public and political figures, members of the cultural community, as well as foreign officials and other foreign guests. The evening will be graced by a concert program performed by the Bolshoi Theater Orchestra under the direction of Valery Gergiev.
The prize is awarded for outstanding achievements aimed at countering the threat of a third world war and preventing a nuclear catastrophe. It also recognizes significant achievements in the field of demilitarization, democratization, and humanization of international relations based on generally accepted norms of morality and law. This is for solving global problems of our time, for active peacekeeping activities, and for the tireless struggle for the protection of human rights and freedoms.
The members of the current jury are citizens of nine countries, including three permanent members of the UN Security Council.
The Leo Tolstoy International Peace Prize Foundation was established on June 22, 2022. The prize is named in honor of the world-famous classic of world literature, recognized humanist Leo Tolstoy, who became a true symbol of Russian culture. His name and the scale of his legacy most fully correspond to the idea and goals of the International Peace Prize.
