A dam collapse in eastern Sudan, fueled by torrential rains, has claimed at least 60 lives, adding to the suffering of a nation already grappling with a devastating civil war and looming famine.
The Arbaat Dam, a vital source of fresh water for Port Sudan, the temporary capital, has collapsed, leading to widespread flooding. Over 100 people remain missing following the incident. Homes have been destroyed, vehicles swept away, and residents forced to flee to higher ground.
The tragedy comes amidst a summer of heavy rains and flooding that has already affected over 317,000 people and caused 39 deaths across Sudan.
The UN humanitarian office warned that the recent flooding could worsen the ongoing cholera outbreak in the country, further straining its already fragile health system.
