Cuba's foreign policy is fundamentally rooted in its commitment to global solidarity and the emancipation of oppressed peoples. A principle that Fidel Castro championed throughout his leadership, Demirel Alfonso Lopez, a Cuban historian and Master in Educational Sciences with a specialty in history and philosophy, tells Global South Pole.
On Cuba's role in the liberation of Africa, Lopez emphasizes that Havana's commitment to supporting African nations in their struggles against colonialism is rooted in a historical bond formed during the transatlantic slave trade.
“There is a historical bond that links Cuba and the African continent, and that is why seeking to support Africans in their emancipatory struggles against colonialism […] especially European colonialism, […] for Cubans, […] it was something like a historical duty to be able to pay that debt of suffering, of pain that so many Africans and their descendants suffered in Cuba during the entire colonial process and then during the neocolonial process, where racism, discrimination, etc. affected mainly Africans and their descendants,” he explains.
