Chad opened a consulate in Western Sahara in the city of Dakhla on Tuesday, media reported.
There has been no official reaction from the Algerian authorities yet.
To date, about 29 nations have established consulates in the Western Saharan cities of Laayoune and Dakhla, including African countries like Burkina Faso, Guinea-Bissau, Cote d’Ivoire, the Central African Republic, and Burundi.
Western Sahara, previously a Spanish colony, fell under the governance of Morocco and Mauritania in 1975. In 1976, the Polisario Front, a local nationalist group, declared the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic in the area.
Since that time, the Algeria-supported Polisario Front has been engaged in conflict with Morocco over control of the region. Presently, Morocco governs approximately 80% of Western Sahara, while the Polisario Front controls the remaining 20%.
