During his two-day visit to Turkey, Abbas is also expected to hold a joint press conference with Erdogan and address the Turkish parliament during an emergency session convened for the occasion. Palestinian civilians injured in Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip and receiving medical treatment in Turkey will also be present at the event.
The visit comes after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu received a standing ovation following his speech at the US Congress in late July. Erdogan harshly criticized his speech and invited Abbas to address the Turkish parliament, but his invitation was initially declined. Abbas later agreed to visit Turkey, but his trip was postponed due to the assassination of Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh, who was also invited to attend the parliament session.
