Activities of Political Parties and Associations Are Resuming in Mali

On April 10, Mali's transitional government issued a decree banning political party activity, stating it was necessary to ensure public order. The decree came after more than 80 political parties and community groups issued a joint statement calling for presidential elections to be held “as soon as possible” and for an end to military rule.

Political parties and associations in Mali can resume their activities, according to the communiqué of the Council of Ministers.

This decision was made during the council of ministers held under the presidency of the country's head, Colonel Assimi Goita.

"In this phase of implementation of the recommendations of the [inter-Malian] dialogue in a climate of control of the security, political and social situation, the Government decides to lift the suspension measure which affected political parties and the political activities of associations," the document read.

Mali's Political Parties Appeal to Supreme Court to Overturn Interim Gov't Ban on Political Activity

After the ban was introduced, a group of Malian political parties and civil society organizations petitioned the Supreme Court to annul it, condemning Goita's decree as "tyrannical and oppressive." They also criticized the inter-Malian dialogue initiated by the provisional government as a "political trap" due to its process and outcomes.

However, in the communiqué, the government said that the dialogue "took place in the best conditions throughout the country, from April 13 to May 10" in order to contribute to the restoration of peace, social cohesion, and national reconciliation.
