Russian Forces Take Control of Two DPR Villages: Defense Ministry

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - After a much-hyped Ukrainian counteroffensive failed in 2023, Russian forces enjoyed a series of successful operations, with more and more settlements coming under Russian control in 2024.

Russian forces have taken control of the villages of Spornoe (also known as Spirne) and Novoalexandrovka (also known as Novooleksandrivka) in the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) over the past 24 hours, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Sunday.

"As a result of successful actions, units of the Tsentr group of forces liberated the village of Novoalexandrovka in the Donetsk People's Republic... Over the past 24 hours, five counterattacks by assault groups of the 24th, 31st, 41st mechanized, and 68th chaser brigades of the Ukrainian army were repulsed," the ministry said, adding that the Yug (South) grouping of Russian forces took control of Spornoe.

Ukraine lost up to 820 servicepeople, eight vehicles, and a US-made M777 howitzer, as well as a Msta-B howitzer, two D-30 howitzers, and two Rapira anti-tank guns, and also a US-made AN/TPQ-36 counter-battery radar, in battles with Tsentr and Yug groups over the past 24 hours, the ministry added.

At the same time, the Sever (North) group of Russian forces eliminated up to 285 Ukrainian soldiers, a tank, and five vehicles, as well as a US-made Paladin self-propelled artillery system, the ministry said. Two US-made M777 howitzers, a D-20 howitzer, and a Rapita anti-tank gun, as well as a Grad multiple launch rocket system (MLRS), were destroyed, the ministry added.
Meanwhile, Russia's Zapad (West) group of forces neutralized up to 515 Ukrainian servicepeople and destroyed two armored vehicles and four vehicles, the ministry noted. During the counter-battery fire, a UK-made Braveheart self-propelled artillery mount, two US-made M777 howitzers, and a Gvozdika self-propelled artillery unit, as well as a Msta-B howitzer and a Grad MLRS, were hit, the ministry said.
Russia's Dnepr group of forces eliminated up to 105 Ukrainian soldiers, two US-made M777 howitzers and a D-30 howitzer, as well as a US-made M119 howitzer, an Anklav electronic warfare station, and three field ammunition depots, the ministry added.
Russia's aerospace forces also hit an echelon with military equipment for the 117 brigade of the Ukrainian army during unloading, the ministry said.
Additionally, Russia's air defense systems downed multiple Ukrainian air targets, namely 72 unmanned aerial vehicles, two Neptune-MD long-range guided missiles, three US-made MALD decoy missiles, and nine US-made HIMARS projectiles, over the past 24 hours, the ministry said.
