Russia Gifts Burundi State-Of-The-Art Mobile Laboratory for Its Healthcare System

In 2023, a comprehensive program of assistance to African countries in the field of sanitary and epidemiological welfare was initiated. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced this initiative at the Second Russia-Africa Summit, which includes the provision of mobile laboratories with advanced biological protection.

A mobile laboratory was handed over by Rospotrebnadzor (the Russian consumer rights and human wellbeing watchdog), and the ceremony was attended by Burundi's Minister of Public Health and the Fight Against AIDS, Lydwine Baradahana, Russian ambassador Valery Mikhailov, and Director General of the National Institute of Public Health, Joseph Nyandwi.
The handover ceremony for the mobile laboratory took place on June 27. The laboratory will aid the country's medics in the monitoring of infectious diseases. The capacity of these laboratories allows for up to 2,000 tests per day for more than 20 infections.
The unique hardware and software complex includes the most modern portable devices: X-ray, ultrasound, mammograph, electrocardiograph, and an eye-pressure measuring device. The vehicle is capable of providing medical services to rural and urban residents outside the walls of medical institutions.
According to the head of Rospoterbnadzor, Anna Popova, Russia has established and is actively working in "two joint scientific centers for prevention and research of infectious diseases: in Burundi and also Guinea."

"The centers combat outbreaks of dangerous infections, organize expeditions to monitor existing and search for unknown microorganisms, develop new tests, and train African specialists," Popova noted.
