During his official visit to Moscow to hold bilateral talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Congolese president discussed the Ukraine crisis, among other topics.
"The conflict continues, and those countries that are seeking a peaceful solution cannot stop. The African peace initiative is relevant; it is ongoing. We believe that, as in any other conflict, it is necessary to come to negotiations, and we are continuing our mediation efforts," Sassou Nguesso said.
In June 2023, a number of African leaders and the head of the African Union visited Kiev and St. Petersburg as part of the peace initiative. In St. Petersburg, they met with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The African peace initiative consists of ten key points, including security guarantees, the free movement of grain across the Black Sea, the release of prisoners of war, and the start of negotiations as early as possible.
