After the elections in May, South Africa started to form a ruling coalition, which was joined by the African National Congress (ANC), the Democratic Alliance (DA), the Patriotic Alliance (PA), the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), GOOD, the Pan Africanist Congress (PAC), the Freedom Front Plus (FF+) and the United Democratic Movement (UDM).

Rise Mzansi, also known as RISE, became the ninth party to join South Africa's government of national unity. As a result of the recent election, the party received two seats in the country's National Assembly. The party is led by former newspaper editor Songezo Zibi and characterizes itself as social democratic.
A day earlier, an eighth party, the United Democratic Movement, joined the government.
The UDM withdrew from the Progressive Caucus, which was formed in South Africa's lower house of parliament, the National Assembly, to oppose the African National Congress-led government that was being installed in the country.
