Thoko Didiza, South Africa's former minister of agriculture, has been elected speaker of the country's National Assembly.
The African National Congress member also served as minister of public works from May 2006 to September 2008.
The lower chamber of the parliament is now set to elect the deputy speaker. The nominees are Vuyolwethu Zungula of the African Transformation Movement and Annelie Lotriet of the Democratic Alliance.
Member parties of South Africa's ruling coalition, which was reportedly formed Friday and includes the ANC, the DA, the Patriotic Alliance, and the Inkatha Freedom Party, endorsed Cyril Ramaphosa's candidacy for president.
