At least six children were killed, and many others were injured in fighting in the western Sudanese city of El Fasher after tensions in the region escalated last week, UNICEF Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa Adele Khodr said.
"We have received harrowing reports that at least six children have been killed and many more injured as fighting continues to escalate in El Fasher, North Darfur State, since last Friday," Khodr said in a statement on Monday.
On April 15, 2023, clashes broke out between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary RSF. The parties to the conflict have since introduced a number of temporary nationwide ceasefires, but none have helped settle the conflict. In late October, the parties resumed negotiations, mediated by Saudi Arabia in Jeddah, but the hostilities in the country continue.
