Elections in South Africa were held in accordance with national laws and regulations, Alexander Asafov, a Russian observer in the republic, told Sputnik Africa.
He also noted the large number of people who wanted to vote in the elections, adding that this event represents an opportunity for the two countries to exchange electoral and observation experiences.
Moreover, according to Asafov, the elections are regarded as one of the most significant political events of the year, alongside the Russian President Election and the BRICS Leaders Forum.
"Today's elections are a milestone for the South African Republic as we define the development trajectory for the Global South," the observer highlighted.
The Russian observation mission, which arrived in South Africa on Monday, includes representatives of the Civic Chamber of Russia and has been accredited by the country's independent election commission.
Last Sunday, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa stated that the country is completely prepared to hold "free" and "fair" general elections and that security forces have done all required to avert disturbances during the upcoming polls.
