The Economic Community of West African States Parliament intends to form an ad hoc mediation committee aimed at reuniting Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso with ECOWAS, Nigerian media reported.
The intention was reportedly revealed by the First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament and Deputy President of the Nigerian Senate, Senator, Barau Jibrin.
"There’s no doubt that we are stronger together and there is absolutely no alternative to our collective aspirations of a united, peaceful and secure ECOWAS," Jibrin said at the opening of the 2024 second Extraordinary Session of the ECOWAS Parliament, as cited by the media.
In late January, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, who earlier formed a collective defense architecture as the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), announced their withdrawal from ECOWAS, citing the organization's ineffectiveness in combating terrorism.
