The tragedy occurred near the city of Jolfa, approximately 600 kilometers (375 miles) northwest of capital Tehran, in the mountainous region of the Iranian province of West Waziristan due to bad weather, according to the authorities.
Rescue teams arrived at the scene about an hour after the accident, with almost 40 units being involved in the rescue operation, which was conducted in very harsh weather conditions.
After the deaths were confirmed on Monday's morning, Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei declared a five-day period of mourning in the country, which was also observed by Pakistan, Lebanon, India, Iraq, and Syria.
Following the death of President Raisi, First Vice President of Iran Mohammad Mokhber is currently the acting head of state. According to the national law, Mokhber will serve as head of state for the next 50 days until a new presidential election is held by a special council.
