St. Petersburg Military Academy Blast Injures Seven Soldiers, Military District States

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The S.M. Budyonny Military Academy of the Signal Corps dates its history back to 1919. The educational institution trains specialists in the field of telecommunications for all branches of the Russian Armed Forces and other departments.

Seven servicepeople have suffered injuries after a World War II-era munition exploded on the territory of the Military Academy of the Signal Corps in St. Petersburg, the Leningrad Military District said on Friday.

"On May 17, 2024, at about 20:00 [05:00 pm GMT] on the economic territory of the Military Academy of Signal Corps named after S.M. Budyonny (St. Petersburg), an explosion occurred during the cleaning of one of the basement premises, while unloading garbage into a container," the district’s press office said, adding a 76-millimeter World War II-era munition "arbitrarily detonated," the District stated.

The explosion injured seven servicepeople, and they were taken to the Defense Ministry's health facility, according to the press office.
