Niger Bans Benin From Transporting Its Cargo From Togo

The imposition of the new restriction comes after Benin banned the export of Niger's oil through its territory. Benin and Niger, a landlocked country in West Africa, have a bilateral road transport agreement that allows Beninese companies to transport Nigerien exports and imports through ports in Benin and neighboring Togo.

Niger has banned Benin from transporting its freight through Togo. From now on, the collection of Nigerien goods in Togo, including at the port of Lomé, "will be reserved exclusively for vehicles registered in Niger and Togo," according to a statement from the Ministry of Transport.
This measure is in line with the bilateral road transport agreement between the two countries, explains the authority.
Niger reserves the right to call on Burkina Faso, Mali and Ghana for these operations "in the event of strong demand".

The move is part of a spiral of tense relations between Porto-Novo and Niamey, which still does not reopen its border for "security reasons", explained the prime minister of Niger.
According to him, certain French bases stationed in Benin "train terrorists" who then come to "destabilize" Niger.
