US Hypersonic Defenses ‘Inadequate,’ Pentagon States

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - In March, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that the alliance needs to qualitatively and quantitatively strengthen its air and missile defenses to ensure protection against Russian hypersonic weapons.

The United States' defenses against hypersonic weapons are inadequate, US Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Space and Missile Defense John Hill said during a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing.

“We have some systems to defend in the terminal stage, but we need more,” Hill said on Wednesday when asked if the US has defenses against hypersonic weapons. “Our hypersonic defenses are inadequate.”

The US is engaged in the development of its own hypersonic weapons capabilities. The US Air Force is working on a hypersonic cruise missile, which it intends to field by 2027.
