Iran is ready to assist Sudan in restoring peace and stability, Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian said at a meeting with his Sudanese counterpart, Hussein Awad.
"We are opposed to any foreign interference in Sudan and stand ready to assist the country in restoring peace and stability," the top Iranian diplomat was quoted by his ministry as saying on Saturday at a meeting that took place in the Gambian capital.
The western African nation's capital of Banjul has been hosting a two-day summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation's heads of state and government.
Awad thanked Iran for its principled position on the war in Sudan, where the regular army has been battling the insurgent Rapid Support Forces for more than a year.
Iranian news agency Mehr cited the Sudanese foreign minister as saying that some foreign governments, including in Western countries, were backing the rebels. He said Khartoum was ready to raise ties with Tehran to the highest level.
