How is AES Progressing in Fight Against Terrorism?

The vast Sahel region of Africa has been a breeding ground for terrorism for years, leaving communities struggling with violence and instability. The sheer expanse of the Sahel region poses a significant challenge to authorities, hampering efforts to effectively track and control the movements of these dangerous groups.

Following their withdrawal from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) earlier this year, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger have forged a new path in the fight against terrorism. The three nations established the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) in September 2023, with the aim of strengthening regional security through joint counterterrorism efforts.
Several months after its formation, the AES conducted its first joint operation in mid-April, demonstrating a proactive approach to tackling the security challenges plaguing the Sahel region. This alliance arose from concerns over ECOWAS' perceived ineffectiveness in addressing the escalating threat of terrorism.
