Following their withdrawal from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) earlier this year, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger have forged a new path in the fight against terrorism. The three nations established the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) in September 2023, with the aim of strengthening regional security through joint counterterrorism efforts.

This alliance arose from concerns over ECOWAS' perceived ineffectiveness in addressing the escalating threat of terrorism.
