Somalia expelled the Ethiopian ambassador and closed the Ethiopian consulates, Somalian Foreign Ministry said.
"This decision follows the resolution passed by the Council of Ministers in response to the actions of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, which infringe upon Somalia’s sovereignty and internal affairs," reads a statement from the country's foreign ministry.
As a result, the Ethiopian ambassador must leave Somali territory within 72 hours.
In addition, two Ethiopian consulates in the autonomous region of Puntland and the self-declared republic of Somaliland must be closed. Diplomatic staff working there have been ordered to leave the territory within a week. The Somali ambassador to Ethiopia has been recalled for "in-depth consultations."
On January 1, Ethiopia inked a memorandum of understanding with Somaliland that granted the landlocked Horn of Africa nation access to the Red Sea and the ability to establish a naval base.
On January 6, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud signed a law "nullifying" the memorandum of understanding between Somaliland and Ethiopia. Then, Somalia urged the United Nations and the African Union to condemn the agreement between the countries.
