More than 74,000 second-generation of Ethiopian diaspora have visited their ancestral homeland in the first phase of the homecoming program, initiated by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, Nebyu Solomon, Ethiopian Diaspora Service Community Development Acting Director, told local media.
According to the acting director, the first phase of the homecoming program, themed "Connect to Your Culture," took place from December 30 to February 8, 2024. Nebyu also highlighted the importance of offering informative events on Ethiopian history and culture during the first phase.
The official also emphasized the success of the first-round homecoming program, noting the enthusiasm displayed by second-generation Diaspora members and their expressed satisfaction with the experience.
During their visit, second-generation Ethiopian Diaspora members explored various tourist destinations and ongoing development projects across the country, Nebyu added.
The second phase of the homecoming program, themed "Connect to Your History," has already commenced and will continue until May 8. Nebyu stated that the phase will provide opportunities for Diaspora members to visit heritage sites, including the newly constructed Adwa Victory Memorial museum, built to honor the country's historic triumph over Italian invaders.
The official underscored the significance of the visit in helping Diaspora members understand Ethiopia's role in Pan-Africanism.
"We hope to inspire them to carry this legacy forward," he said.
