Togolese President Faure Gnassingbe has returned to the country's parliament for a second reading the draft constitutional reform providing for a transition to a parliamentary system, his office said on Saturday.
"Taking into account the fact that everything is subject to improvement, and taking into account the interest sparked among the population since the adoption of this document, the president of the republic asked the president of the National Assembly to hold a second reading of the bill," the presidential office said in a statement published on X.
According to reports, under the new constitution, the Togolese president will be elected for a single six-year term by the members of parliament rather than in a general vote. The constitution also introduces the position of "president of the council of ministers," the holder of which will be authorized to manage government affairs for six years as well.
