On March 18, 2014, an agreement was signed between Russia and the Republic of Crimea on the admission of Crimea to the country and the establishment of two new regions within Russia: the Republic of Crimea and the federal city of Sevastopol.
Russian officials have repeatedly noted that the people of Crimea voted democratically and in accordance with international law and the UN Charter to reunite with Russia. Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared the Crimea issue "closed."
On Saturday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stressed that the reunification of Crimea with Russia was the most appropriate response to the events that occurred after the Euromaidan coup in Ukraine.
