The African nation asked the ICJ back in December to determine whether Israel was committing genocide in Gaza. The Hague-based court ruled provisionally that Israel must allow aid into the Palestinian enclave, where half a million are now on the brink of famine, according to the Palestinian foreign minister.
Pretoria said in an urgent request that it was "compelled to return to the Court in light of the new facts and changes in the situation in Gaza — particularly the situation of widespread starvation."
It asked the court to indicate additional provisional measures in the case concerning the application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in Gaza, citing urgent need "to ensure the safety and security of 2.3 million Palestinians in Gaza, including over a million children." It called on the court to do so without holding a hearing given the "extreme urgency of the situation."
