Russia calls for land delivery in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to be unblocked, the Russian Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Anna Evstigneeva said on Tuesday.
"We call for the unblocking of the land supply routes to Goma [city in the DRC]," Evstigneeva told the UN Security Council members during a briefing on the DRC.
This has led to a great humanitarian crisis and even a high displacement of IDPs [internally displaced persons], she added.
The ongoing political instability has also dried up food production. According to the World Food Programme data, about 6.3 million people are internally displaced in the DRC, of whom nearly 6 million are within the three eastern provinces, with about 4.4 million people affected by malnutrition.
The DRC has long been facing attacks against civilians by different rebel and militant groups operating in the eastern part of the country. The attacks result in regular loss of life, mass displacements, and increased instability.
